All-Star Team Selection Rules

Article XVI - ALL STAR TOURNAMENT TEAMS

Participation of as many girls as possible is encouraged. The All-Star Tournament teams will represent Vestavia against numerous other local teams (e.g., Hoover, Leeds, etc.). All-Star Tournament play consists of four separate tournaments on consecutive weekends (usually the four weekends in June). Usually the teams will play two to four “seeding games” and then be seeded for the tournament. The seeding games usually occur on Thursday and Friday nights with the tournament being played on Saturday, and sometimes Sundays, of each week. This is definitely a commitment, but is a great softball learning experience.

  1. Eligibility of players: All players who are within the age limitations for each tournament category and have played softball in Vestavia’s rec league during the season are eligible. Players who wish to be considered must have their parents sign a commitment form and conduct agreement, which will be available through their league’s director and head coach. Only those girls for whom the appropriate forms have been received by the Board will be considered for All-Star selection.
  2. It will be the goal of the league to field a competitive All-Star Tournament team. Any questions about this will be decided at the sole discretion of the board.
  3. All Star Selection:

A.The softball board shall be responsible for supervising the selection of All Star players in accordance with these rules.
    B. Selection of the All Star team(s) shall occur at a meeting attended by head coaches. Softball board members who were not head coaches in that league and do not have a daughter to be considered as an All Star should be present for supervision of this meeting. If a head coach cannot be present at this meeting, the head coach should appoint an assistant coach to take their place with the understanding that this assistant coach should be familiar with the players and that the assistant coach’s vote will be in place of the head coach’s vote.
    C. All Star selection meeting shall be two or three weeks prior to the end of the regular season. The softball board shall determine the exact date.
    D. The number of All Star teams will be decided during the selection meeting at the discretion of the head coaches and softball board members. Consideration should be given as to the availability of coaching and the availability of pitching, as applicable.
    E. Consideration will be given by the board as to providing a “paid coach” to an All Star team which the league will pay for. The appointment of this coach and negotiation of fees will be at the discretion of the softball board.
    F. Each All Star team shall have a coach if not provided by the board that will be decided on by a vote of the head coaches. It will be the responsibility of the coach to: (1) Appoint a team mom and dad, (2) Acquire equipment as needed for the team, (3) Appoint assistant coaches, (4) Be responsible for or appoint someone to be responsible for distribution to tournament directors and umpires.
    G. In order to be considered for the All-Star coach position, this person should contact the league president, whose responsibility it will be to present these names to the head coaches at some time prior to the All Star selection meeting.
    H. It will be the responsibility of the team mom or dad to acquire uniforms, help the team manager with distribution of information and organize a snack schedule or party (if deemed necessary).
    I. The All Star team should be selected in the following manner:
    1. The oldest girls’ head coaches should meet first including head coaches from all applicable leagues. After the oldest team has been selected, then the next youngest age group, etc.
    2. The head coaches with voting privileges will be as follows:

    a. Belles coaches for the U-14 team
    b. Ponytail coaches for the U-12 team
    c. Southern coaches for the U-10 team
    d. Angel coaches for the U-8 team
    e. Pigtail coaches for the U-6 team

    3. Each head coach will receive a page to keep notes on each player and a ballot form.
    4. Each head coach will present the girls on his team he feels could play All Stars for that meeting’s age group. Other head coaches should take notes and ask questions as needed about each girl.
    5. After all of the girls have been presented by their head coach, each head coach will fill out a ballot with the twelve girls they believe should be on the All Star team.
    6. The ballots are to be collected and tabulated by the board members supervising the meeting.
    7. Any girl that is on all of the ballots is on the team.
    8. The remaining candidates receiving the most votes are selected to bring the roster to the selected number of players, providing the players received a vote on at least 50% of the ballots.
    9. Another ballot is to be filled out by the head coaches. On this ballot each coach will choose his next ten picks in order from the remaining pool of girls.
    10. These ballots will be tabulated as follows: The first pick on each ballot will receive ten points, the second pick nine points, etc., with the tenth pick receiving one point.
11.Using this point system, the remaining girls will be placed in order to fill in other spots on the team, or teams if more than one team is selected for that age group.

    J. The team manager will add girls to the team from the ordered second ballot as needed until the team is formed.
    K. The parents of a selected player will be required to sign a commitment form and conduct agreement. Any violation of this agreement by the player and or parents without due cause will prevent this player from being selected to play All-Stars the following year.
    L. The cost for each player to play All-Stars will be established by the board.
    M. Each coach must bring his team’s completed evaluation report to the coaches meeting to have a vote on the All Star selection.
    N. Any coach not attending or failing to have an informed assistant coach attend in their absence may be excluded from future coaching opportunities.
